Direct Pointing By Means Of Voice Or Keyboard

by Yizhar Hon, Performance Systems       January 31, 2002

Commodio Inc. has developed an innovative Assistive Technology software which provides freedom in human-computer interaction – direct pointing by means of voice or keyboard.

This is implemented in Commodio’s QPointer line of products. It is the only system that allows for complete voice control of a computer and enables a hands-free and mouseless operation of any computer and any application, in any environment. The principle of QPointer’s voice activation is “What You See Is What You Say” – no need to remember voice commands and learn how to speak to different applications. QPointer also provides dictation ability to complete its voice solution.

In addition to voice activation, QPointer offers a ‘silent mode’ – keyboard-only operation of the computer without having to remember long lists of keyboard shortcuts. This ‘silent mode’ of QPointer enhances a regular keyboard to one with capabilities of a direct pointing device, and allows it to bring the cursor directly to any object on a computer screen.

QPointer allows the user to surf the Internet, create and edit documents, work with any application and to operate complicated GUI and the Windows environment – all this in a simple and uniform manner. QPointer allows the user full access and control of the computer. This method of human-computer interaction does not require any change in user habits

Commodio’s software is a novel technology that constantly analyzes the content displayed on a computer screen, and extracts from it all visible objects that appear, such as text, graphics, images and controls. It lets the user point directly at an object on the screen and move the cursor without difficulty from one object to another, hence letting the user think in terms of objects instead of pixels – resulting in a much more user-friendly, intuitive, quick and efficient operation.

QPointer can be used to point at the following screen objects:
  • Words – in documents, on buttons and icons, basically anywhere on the screen.
  • Graphics – on icons, links, toolbar elements, etc.
  • Controls – scrollbar elements, minimize and maximize buttons, etc.
Commodio’s technology edge is the result of its proprietary algorithms that combine interception of system calls and messages with image processing of the screen buffer. The technology offers several advantages over other technologies that deal with screen content, including: full-screen real-time content analysis, complete content recognition and the ability to trace changes in content over time. Moreover, Commodio’s definition of screen objects is flexible and expandable.

The Commodio platform technology can be combined with complementary hardware and software for leading edge products in the disability arena.

Commodio Inc. seeks cooperation with resellers, distributors and manufacturers of Assistive Technology in the United States and Canada, along with rehabilitation centers and organizations.

The technology was invented and developed in Israel. Commodio's marketing arm for the United States and Canada, Performance Systems is located at 9660 Hillcroft, Suite 302, Houston, Texas 77096.
